Message From the LVCSD Board of Education

It’s hard to believe that another school year is almost over and we are already marking our calendars for this year’s moving up ceremonies and high school graduation. As we do that, the Board has been reflecting on the year that has passed and how proud we are to be serving this district, which has accomplished so much, since the school doors opened in September. Here are just a few examples of the standout performances of our students and staff:• Bayville Elementary School was recognized this year as a Blue Ribbon School of Excellence. This is a national recognition, making Bayville one of the best in the nation.• Locust Valley Intermediate School has also received national recognition with a TOSHIBA ExploraVision National winner. Three students took this title after competing against thousands of students across the country.• Locust Valley Middle School has produced one of the most successful science competition teams in the school’s history, competing with sixth graders against eighth graders from other schools and impressing even those school’s coaches.• Locust Valley High School has been named among the nation’s best high schools – yet again. Among 27,000 high schools, ours continues to be recognized by national publications as being one of the best in the country. Further, the high school wrestling team became the New York State champions this year, and just last week, we learned that the high school has been named a New York State School of Distinction. This means that every single athletic team this year maintained an average GPA of 90 or higher. It takes incredible determination to succeed on the field and in the classroom at such a high level. The bottom line is that Locust Valley’s accomplishments are being recognized far and wide and this Board of Education is proud to provide the programs and services that allow our students and staff to perform at such high levels. We look forward to seeing what the students and staff will do next year! The Locust Valley Central School District Board of Education

The entire Locust Valley community joined together to raise more than $25,000 for cancer research through the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life event. With 29 teams spending the night on the Locust Valley High School football field, the event brought awareness of this deadly disease along with bonding through fun activities such as Zumba and a performance by students from Maryann's Dance Studio. LVHS students Paige Gugerty,Gabrielle Dell'Aquilo, Micailah Donner, Stephanie Mysholowsky, Emma Gugerty, and Stephanie Bousleiman were the chair people for Relay for Life and have been working the entire school year to coordinate the event. Many of the girls are members of the high school’s Cancer Awareness Club and worked under the guidance of advisor Scott St. Denis. Cancer survivors and caregivers were honored during the event and some shared stories about their experiences and how grateful they were for donations that helped fund important research that saved their lives. Board of Education Trustee George M. Stimola addressed the crowd as a caregiver – he recently lost his grandmother to cancer. Mr. Stimola said he has been attending Relay for Life for many years and that he is proud of the Locust Valley community for their outstanding support year after year. The track was lined with luminaries - candles that memorialized or honored loved ones. Through the purchase of these luminaries, team sponsorship, and the sales of merchandise such as shirts, Locust Valley High School’s donation will make a difference in the fight against this deadly disease.

A group of Locust Valley High School students has the ability to make a room full of people laugh, cry, and gasp in shock – all in one night. During the Sixth Annual Writers/ Directors’ Spring Showcase, students performed dramatic and comedic dialogues from original scripts for a packed house. Working with faculty advisors/directors, Lawrence Lynch and Adele Bolitho, thirteen skits were performed in front of a live audience. The event, which takes place twice each year, gives students an opportunity to express their emotions, creativity, and inner most thoughts. “The showcase gives students a chance to explore their writing, directing, and acting skills all in one place,” said Mr. Lynch. “They learn how to rework their scripts to improve their performance and they are very supportive of each other.” The group, which meets after school, is open to all students and has been growing in the six years since it began. This year’s performance, with 13 scripts, was the largest show yet. “The students learn so much and really enjoy it,” said Ms. Bolitho. “They bond with each other, making new friends and trying new things." Congratulations to the following writers, directors, and performers: Pete Barell, Rhonda Drewes, Laura Doukas, Anne Hollmuller, Shivangi Kakar, Richard Kihm, Christian Manzi, Zinia Morici, Jamie Murcott, Samantha Prosser, Ernest Schieferstein, Annarose Settepani , Jessica Turner, Cassandra Vnook, Victor Cafaro, John Ciarletta, Dylan Gelbard, Mitch Guadagni , Stela Ieraci, and Sean Rudowsky.
